Earth Owl

You meditate in a black cloak speckled soft with sun

your calm demeanor

comforts my eyes

your absorbent mind

emerald acquiescence

and gold

then you fly

through the dew

(mocking my sloth)

on little feet that make

no sound

I cannot deny,

you are here

and I believe in magic

  1. Cats really do seem so wise, as they quietly study the world. They also seem to mock we humans. I no longer have a cat, but do have a wonderful dog who deserves a poem in his honor some day. He’s sitting by my feet as I type this. i love how the poem begins with a still and solid portrait and then in a flash the movement starts and transforms into abstract art in which the reader sees the magic.

    1. The cat got my attention yesterday, but there is a yellow dog around here somewhere that as you say deserves her own poetry…in fact she tends to write it allover your whites in her boundless enthusiasm!

  2. I have 5 cats, all of whom are shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Even the chubby, extremely good natured one who can’t even clean his own butt. 🙂

This is gorgeous, and captures the soul of a cat perfectly. Wild. A little high and mighty. Oh so wise. Pure, ancient magic.

  3. I believe in magic too. It is the same in oxygyn, in prayer, a crowded bus, an antelope running, and in all of our hopes for one another. It is that in each heart that has been made into a bridge.
