This reminds me of Odin…wandering with his knarled walking stick and broad hat, looking for trouble. Maybe a fight with Loki. Maybe a war to start. Maybe just hang out on a tree somewhere. 😉 Since I do not know this song (TRAVESTY, I know), I do not know its origins, but I like what it says to me personally. My Scandinavian is clearly showing. 🙂
I bow to you, Freya. 🙂 Gorgeous poem. As always.

I need to know more about Odin and Freya… it does have a argumentative feel… i always thought of it as a call to all people to wake up a bit and begin to consciously create a path… rather than float around blaming everything else for their circumstances/ emotions…. xxxxx

Just for when and if you feel like lightly reading about them. 🙂
I know my interpretation is odd, but it was just something I was reminded of. You might see why. The silver beard, the speckled chaos…the warsome, bloody statement. Odin would get people all worked up, and then dedicate the resulting battles to himself by throwing his spear over the battlefield. And yet, Odin was also the god of poetry.
Either way….I adore this poem. It’s gorgeous.

SwirlGirl –
John Lennon would probably have really liked your Scandinavian interpretation. He wrote Nowhere Man about himself…yes, I can see him wandering with his knarled walking stick and broad hat, looking for trouble. Maybe a fight with Paul…
Listen, don’t panic, you’re young and have plenty of time. But, um..the thing is, you have to know the Beatles. Sorry, orders from God. (:
Don’t worry –
Take your time, don’t hurry XXOO

thumbs up on this interpretation!

I guess I am more a Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen kind of girl. Boys diving off of cars and splashing into the street. Cold and broken Hallelujahs. That kind of thing. I do love the Beatles, but have not listened to everything. In my defence, I named my son Jude because of a Beatles song… 😉

Ok, with all due respect to Odin, Freya and John Lennon, why did I think of the Ancient Mariner when I read this?

‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’ by Samuel Coleridge – perhaps it’s because he also has a beard and it’s a maritime adventure? It could also be considered a ‘pompous fretful poem’… 🙂
IT IS an ancient Mariner,
And he stoppeth one of three.
‘By thy long grey beard and glittering eye,
Now wherefore stopp’st thou me? etc

Hmmm is his the question, of ‘where’ is he to be stopped or ‘why’ … he is very very serious in his questioning and sort of praying or fearing…. and I am too so
maybe the nowhere man is an aspect of that intense desire to understand and be free….
